SUMMARY:Turning up the Heat on Marine Disease from Seagrasses to Seastars
DESCRIPTION:Infectious disease outbreaks in the oceans are fueled by increasing human activities\, but especially\na warming ocean and linkages with climate change. I’ll talk about our work with ecologically important\ndisease outbreaks at the bottom and top of marine ecosystems. Disease outbreaks rapidly remove\nvast areas of live tissue in plants and animals that create critical ocean habitats\, such as eelgrass\nmeadows and coral reefs. Our research\, based in the San Juan Islands\, shows large impacts from\na seagrass infectious disease\, linked with warming events. I’ll describe our new project\, monitoring\nhealth of eelgrass beds from San Diego to Alaska. The large impacts of disease are imperiling a\nhabitat that itself has the capacity to detoxify waters polluted by pathogenic bacteria. In other work\,\nat the top of the food chain\, an ongoing epidemic imperils keystone starfish predators and was\nfueled in the early stages by a warming ocean. The loss of the large subtidal star\, Pycnopodia\nhelianthoides is contributing to population explosions of urchins and devastated kelp beds \nDrew Harvell’s research on the health and sustainability of marine ecosystems has taken her from the\nreefs of Mexico\, Indonesia\, and Hawaii to the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest and has resulted in\nover 170 academic articles in journals such as Science\, Nature\, and Science Advances. She is a Fellow\nof the Ecological Society of America and the Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future; has received\nthe Seattle Aquarium Conservation Researcher of 2020\, the NW Yachting Magazine Outstanding\nEnvironmental Leadership Award 2020\, and the Society of American Naturalists Jasper Loftus-Hills\nAward; and is on the board of Friday Harbor Marine Labs. Harvell is passionate about communicating\nScience. In addition to her new book\, Ocean Outbreak (winner of the Prose Award and others)\, and\nher earlier book\, A Sea of Glass (winner of the National Outdoor Book Award and Honorable Mention\nRachel Carson Award)\, her writing appears in The New York Times\, CNN and The Hill. \nJoin Zoom Meeting:  \nhttps://washington.zoom.us/j/120178768?pwd=akJZcFNtRDUwc1hVVWdGWDFKZlNQUT09\nMeeting ID: 120 178 768\nPassword: 275919

SUMMARY:Ocean Outbreak: Confronting the Rising Tide of Marine Disease
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning author and Cornell professor Drew Harvell will talk about her recent books and tell how she and her team have worked to sustain ocean biodiversity in the world’s oceans. She’ll tell of SCUBA expeditions to confront the rising tide of ocean outbreaks such as the Sea Star Epidemic and global coral reef health as detailed in her new book\, OCEAN OUTBREAK.\nThe book explores the impact from a perfect storm of outbreak conditions caused by human activity\, as infections cause massive die-offs in the ocean with sweeping ecological impacts\, including loss of food harvest and impacts to our own health as a warming ocean provides an incubator for pathogens. Ocean Outbreak has received strong praise from Nature\, Forbes\, Smithsonian Magazine and The Atlantic. \nHarvell is Curator of the Blaschka Marine Invertebrates Collection at Cornell\, and her earlier book\, A Sea of Glass: Searching for the Blaschka’s Fragile Legacy in an Ocean at Risk\, celebrate the biodiversity still in our oceans. A Sea of Glass was picked as one of the best eight “Art Meets Science” books of 2016 by the Smithsonian and winner of the National Outdoor Book Award.

SUMMARY:Ocean Outbreak: Confronting the Rising Tide of Marine Disease
DESCRIPTION:There is a growing crisis in our oceans – rates of infectious disease outbreaks are on the rise. Marine epidemics have the potential to cause a mass die-off of wildlife from the bottom to the top of the food chain\, impacting ocean ecosystems health and lives on land. Fueled by sewage\, unregulated aquaculture\, and drifting plastic in warming seas\, ocean outbreaks are sentinels of impending global environmental disaster. \nOcean Outbreak follows renowned scientist Drew Harvell and her colleagues as they investigate how four iconic marine animals – corals\, abalone\, salmon\, and starfish – have been devastated by disease. Based on over twenty years of research\, this firsthand account of the sometimes creeping\, sometimes exploding impact of disease on our ocean’s biodiversity ends with a hopeful message. Through policy changes and the implementation of innovative solutions\, we can reduce major outbreaks\, save some ocean ecosystems\, and protect our fragile environment. \n\nAll book club meetings begin at 8:00 pm Eastern Time.\nAnyone can participate. Just read the book prior to the discussion\, and on the day of the meeting dial in using our toll free number 1-866-662-7513. Then use the passcode 1170791#\nBefore each meeting we’ll send out a reminder note through our email list along with series of discussion questions the meeting leader will have prepared.\nPlease be aware there are a limited number of seats available for each meeting\, so try to dial in just a few minutes before the official start time.\nHave questions? SUMMARY:Turning up the heat on ocean outbreaks
DESCRIPTION:The Harvell Lab studies infectious disease outbreaks of foundation and keystone species in the ocean. The lab’s current focus is on tracking spread and impact of wasting disease of eelgras from San Diego to Alaska. Dr. Harvell’s book\, Ocean Outbreak\, investigates four major marine disease epidemics\, how the consequent changes reverberate through the interactions of the ocean organisms themselves and even come back to threaten our livelihood and health. Her first book\, A Sea of Glass\, won a National Outdoor Book Award for Natural History Literature\, a Rachel Carson Environmental Literature Award and was one of 2016’s best “Art Meets Science” books by Smithsonian Magazine. \nAccommodations for disabilities may be made by contacting 541-737-2993 or ib@oregonstate.edu.

SUMMARY:Turning up the heat on ocean outbreaks
DESCRIPTION:How can we stop the spread of infectious diseases in our oceans\, threatening life both in water and on land? In a Chats in the Stacks talk\, Drew Harvell will explain how we can protect aquatic ecosystems from dangerous diseases as she discusses her new book Ocean Outbreak: Confronting the Rising Tide of Marine Disease (University of California Press\, 2019). \nA professor of ecology and evolutionary biology\, Harvell devoted more than two decades to study the devastating impact of diseases on four marine species—corals\, abalone\, salmon\, and starfish—and the destructive effects of human practices such as sewage dumping and unregulated aquaculture. She also gained insights about how we can boost nature’s own pathogen-fighting systems to help heal our fragile ocean environments. \nThis book talk is supported by the Mary A. Morrison Public Education Fund for Mann Library. Light refreshments will be served.
