Turning up the heat on ocean outbreaks

October 17, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Free

How can we stop the spread of infectious diseases in our oceans, threatening life both in water and on land? In a Chats in the Stacks talk, Drew Harvell will explain how we can protect aquatic ecosystems from dangerous diseases as she discusses her new book Ocean Outbreak: Confronting the Rising Tide of Marine Disease (University of California Press, 2019).

A professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, Harvell devoted more than two decades to study the devastating impact of diseases on four marine species—corals, abalone, salmon, and starfish—and the destructive effects of human practices such as sewage dumping and unregulated aquaculture. She also gained insights about how we can boost nature’s own pathogen-fighting systems to help heal our fragile ocean environments.

This book talk is supported by the Mary A. Morrison Public Education Fund for Mann Library. Light refreshments will be served.
